Whisper

Whisper is a photo and group messaging app designed to allow users to post stock or personal pictures along with comments – usually secrets or confessions, some including outlandish or obscene content. The app is fully anonymous. Users are not required to register or supply a real name when joining the network. Many or most of the site’s users are teens or young adults.

The age rating for Whisper is 17+ (users under 17 are not allowed) but like most social platforms, the age limit is not enforced. Users are not required to register or supply a real name when joining the network.

Content that is illegal is prohibited on Whisper, but nudity and sexually suggestive content are permitted. Whisper claims to ban content that is obscene or pornographic, but that does not appear to be the case.

The site is reportedly used for cyberbulling – posting a picture of another person with negative comments. Users can report bullying by clicking the flag icon in the upper right hand corner of the app.

The app uses GPS coordinates to determine a user’s location, and as such, is used by predators. The app’s default setting for GPS is “on,” but users can turn it off.

We recommend that users under 17 not use Whisper, and that anyone who is privacy-conscious should turn off Geo-location functionality.
